SB800 is a great little flash, but it's been out of production for more than a year, so used units are the only ones you'll find on the market. SB700 or SB900 are your best choices from Nikon. Indoors, an external flash will have enough power that you can aim it at the ceiling and provide diffused light that really reduces the harsh shadows and redeye that are common with the on-camera flash. I recommend an external flash for party use, even if you keep it on the hotshoe. I currently have an SB-400, 2 SB-900s and will likely add an SB-700 to my full kit. My personal favorite to pair with the D300/s, D700, D3/x/s. Better in almost every way compared to the SB-600, but is significantly more expensive. Can be used as a commander in Nikon's CLS system as well as a slave. Similar to the SB-600 in size with the SB-900 menu system. The menu system leaves something to be desired and it cannot be used as a commander in Nikon's CLS, only a slave.replaced by the SB-700 Still available at some retail stores and it can't be beat for the money. SB-600 = DISCONTINUED, but very nice, inexpensive flash unit. CHEAP AND EFFECTIVE, but not much better than a pop-up unless used with a Demb portrait dish Using it raises the flash head a bit and it can be bounced off of the ceiling. Takes 2 AA batteries and barely feels like it's there when it's on the camera. It is small enough to throw in my pocket when travelling so I don't have to resort to my pop-up. SB-400 = Very small and cheap alternative to the pop-up.

Built in flash = too close to the lens = not ideal, but usable in a pinch.
